To calculate the risk of developing breast cancer compared to another woman the tool asks questions on age, family history of breast and ovarian cancer, genetic factors, height, weight, alcohol intake, menstrual and reproductive history, and previous breast conditions. The result tells women if they are at 'low or average risk', 'moderately increased risk' or 'potentially high risk' of developing breast cancer.
Designed for women over 20 years, the tool also provides details of what has contributed to this risk. “Unfortunately no one can guarantee that any one woman will never develop breast cancer, but it is important that women are aware of what can potentially put them at increased risk,” Dr Zorbas said.
Breast cancer survivor Pam Bell said her volunteer work educating women about breast cancer has shown to her a great deal of confusion exists over breast cancer. “I would encourage all women to go online, get informed and tell your mothers, daughters, sisters and girlfriends about the new risk calculator too. Knowledge is power when it comes to breast cancer,” Ms Bell said.
El calculador de riesgo se puede consultar en NBCC.
