Mejor sujetador = menos cirugía mamaria

El Servicio Nacional de Salud del Reino Unido ha comenzado a diseñar un sujetador mamario para reducir el número de intervenciones de reducción mamaria.

Miembros de la British Medical Association han dicho que se está preparando una línea de lencería, para compensar las peticiones de cirugía mamaria en mujeres que usan sujetadores demasiado pequeños, y como primera medida previa a la cirugía. “This meeting believes many women requesting breast reduction surgery are wearing bra sizes several sizes too small and that the services of bra-fitters should be made available on the NHS as the first step in the referral for breast reduction surgery". Los estudios han demostrado que nueve de cada diez mujeres no usan la talla adecuada, y el 22% jamás se han preocupado por saber cual es su talla.

La cirugía mamaria es una de las formas más frecuentes de cirugía cosmética en Gran Bretaña. Un hospital bratánico puede llevar a cabo unas 100 operaciones de reducción mamaria, con un coste medio de £ 4,500 each. Si se reduce el número de dichas operaciones, el ahorro puede ser notable. Emma Chapman, una experta en ropa interior de la empresa Fayreform, habla de su experiencia de evitar cirugía con un buen sujetador:

“I have fitted women who had been wearing bras that were too small and causing pain and discomfort due to the wires digging in and the fabric chafing,” she said.“By fitting them into a larger size all discomfort was alleviated and their shape and appearance were much improved.”

En el congreso de la British Medical Association , se ha aprobado la siguiente moción:

“This meeting believes many women requesting breast reduction surgery are wearing bra sizes several sizes too small and that the services of bra-fitters should be made available on the NHS as the first step in the referral for breast reduction surgery.

“We therefore call on the BMA to lobby for these services to be provided.”

El Profesor Kefah Mokbel, un especialista de cirugía mamaria de los Hospitales St George’s y Princess Grace de Londres, dice que la mayoría de las mujeres que fueron visitadas en sus clínicas usan tallas inadecuadas.

“In one study we found 100% were wearing the wrong bra. They tend to underestimate the back size and overestimate the cup”.

“This leads to discomfort in the breast, neck and shoulders. These symptoms are interpreted as physical symptoms which indicate the need for breast reduction.”

El Dr. Patrick Mallucci, cirujano del Royal Free Hospital de Londres,añade que:

“A number of large-breasted women have not been wearing the right bras and experience extra discomfort. If you get them wearing the right bra and fit them properly you can probably relieve some of that discomfort without them necessarily needing surgery.”

También existe la visión inversa del problema: muchas mujeres usan sujetadores de talla demasiado grande en su contorno y demasido pequeños para albergar la mama.

Las mujeres "reales", no las que aparecen en los medios, comienzan a abrirse camino.
